Imphal, March 25, 2013:
In protest against the alleged negligence attitude of the Government of India towards development of North Eastern States, All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) under the aegis of North East Students Union (NESO) organized a sit-in-protest demonstration at Keishampat junction here today.
The sit-in- protest demonstration was participated by students from various schools and colleges apart from representatives of various other women organizations of the State.
Speaking to mediapersons on the sidelines of the protest demonstration, Naresh Thiyam, President of AMSU, stated that ever since Manipur was emerged to the India Union, the people of the State have been deprived of their basic rights.
Apart from this, the people of Northeast as a whole and that of Manipur in particular are being discriminated by mainland India.
He went on to alleged that the Indian Government has been deploying a large number of security personnel in the State and giving them free hand to kill innocent people with immunity granted under AFSPA.
Moreover, the natural resources of the State are been exploited in the name of taking up developmental projects.
The State governments or the Central government have not instituted any educational policy for the welfare of the student community in the northeast region despite launching various agitations under the aegis of NESO in this regard, he added.
While the protest demonstration was underway, a team of Imphal city police led by its OC Tejbir came to the spot around 1 pm and stopped it from further proceeding on the ground that the organizers have not taken the permission from the concerned authority.
Nonetheless, leaders of AMSU later submitted an eight-point memorandum to the Governor of Manipur highlighting their grievances.
