TRCC (Thoubal River Conservation Committee) on Saturday said it welcomes the proposed July 31 meet of authorities concerned of the Government to regulate river sand mining in the State.
Regulating the sand mining will strike a balance to save the rivers and at the same time provide livelihoods to sand miners, it said welcoming the proposed meet in a statement today.
All stakeholders should be invited to the table to discuss and secure a lasting solution to the issue and regulate mining activities in the river beds, said the committee.

Utmost care must be taken and sound regulations should be brought to save rivers from pollution and preserve their natural ecosystems.
The number of people who depend on the river water are far larger than number of workers who mine sand for livelihood, said the committee seeking the attention of the authorities concerned to carefully craft the regulations to address all stakeholders's interest.
Regulations should be made following the "Sustainable sand mining management guidelines 2016" of the Ministry of Forest, Environment and Climate Change set according to order of the Supreme Court, it said.
The guideline allows manual river sand mining by hands with Environment Assessment Authority keeping close eye on the mining activities, it said.
Use and operation of heavy machineries inside the Thoubal river had polluted the water and damaged the river ecosystem to great extent.
Due to dams in upstream, new sand are not brought down by the stream.
Excessive mining of the sand will only further damage the river system, it said.
It also maintained that Thoubal river need no additional regulations.
What it needs is steps to restore the damaged river ecosystem, said the committee asserting that any form of initiative or attempt to provide or procure license and award lease to mine sand from Thoubal river will be met with stringent agitation and complaint to Court.
