UCM recalls Great June Uprising

Paying due respect and homage to the 18 'martyrs' who sacrificed their lives for the cause of safeguarding the territorial integrity of Manipur during June 18 Uprising of 2001, United Committee Manipur (UCM) organized the Great June Uprising commemorative function at Kekrupat Memorial complex here today.
Titular King of Manipur Leishemba Sanajaoba, who was present at the occasion, said that people of Manipur should not be taken for granted on the issue of territorial integrity of the state.
If the territorial integrity of the state is disturbed, they would never remain silent and would not even hesitate from sacrificing their lives for the sake of protecting the territorial integrity of Manipur.
Exhorting all the people to unite and live peacefully, the titular king noted that lack of unity and peace would hamper in the effort to safeguard the territorial integrity of the state.
He also pointed out that until and unless influx of non-Manipuris into the state, which is increasing at an alarming rate, is stopped, there would always be threat on the territorial integrity of Manipur.
Delivering the Presidential address, Yumnam Nabachandra, President of UCM said that the feeling of hatred and distrust among the people of the hills and the plains has emerged due to practice of different religions and at the same time by the difference in the development process carried out in the two areas.
However, this feeling of mutual hatred and distrust has been further aggravated by the manner in which the Central government brought out different policies and programmes for the hills and the plains.
Observing that UCM is for all the people of Manipur and is an apex body in the state, Nabachandra pointed out that "The great heroes who sacrificed their lives during the Great June Uprising are a part of the history of Manipur and that we should never forget them" .
