Imphal, June 18 2012:
With the twin objectives of improving the power situation and enhance revenue collection, Power Department has decided to re-launch its drive against unauthorised connections together with police, this time more intensively.
An official source informed that the Chief Minister today convened a meeting with Home Minister Gaikhangam, DGP R Baral, Principal Secretary (Power) LP Golmei, SPs of the four valley districts and officials of Power Department.
The meeting deliberated at length on the proposed drive.
During the meeting, O Ibobi pointed out that the department has many shortcomings.
"No meter reader ever came to read household power meters even in my constituency", said Ibobi.
He also instructed all those present at the meeting to launch an intensive drive against unauthorised connections together with police.
Police Department has agreed to appoint a nodal officer not lower than the rank of DIG to coordinate security related matters.
Two police teams each would be allocated for Imphal West and Imphal East districts, and one each for Thoubal and Bishnupur districts.
Notably, since assuming charge of Power Department, O Ibobi has been working to convert the department into a corporation.
For this, SBI CAPS has been already hired as consultant.
Moreover, the State Cabinet has already approved the proposal to appoint former Chief Secretary Jarnail Singh as Power Advisor to the Chief Minister.
