Sit-in protest demands relocation of plywood factories & sawmills

Residents of Yairipok Khoirom Mathak Leikai today staged a sit-in protest demanding the closure/relocation of plywood factories and sawmills functioning in Khoirom Minor Industrial Estate (MIE) .
The protest was organised by JAC Against The Establishing Of The Khoirom MIE In Residential Area at Khoirom Mathak Leikai Handpump Makhong Community Hall.
Speaking to media persons, a protester appealed to the State Government to consider the wishes of the people and relocate the MIE from Khoirom Mathak Leikai at the earliest.
He also highlighted the problems/difficulties faced by people of the area due to the 5 sawmills and 2 plywood factories functioning in the MIE.

"The noise from the sawmills have been causing problems to students, senior citizens and people with medical conditions", said the protester while adding that the smoke coming out from the plywood factories is also a major concern for the people residing in the vicinity of the MIE.
He further mentioned that the people of Khoirom Mathak Leikai and nearby villages are against the proposed construction of 5 more plywood factories in the MIE.
The protesters further appealed to Chief Minister N Biren Singh and authorities concerned to either close down the Minor Industrial Estate or relocate it from the residential area.
Later, the villagers also took out a rally shouting slogans such as "Relocate Khoirom MIE from residential area", "We condemn pollution of air, water", "Save environment", etc.
