Imphal, September 04 2022:
In continuation of the protests launched by Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur (ST-DCM) demanding inclusion of Meitei/Meetei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list of the Constitution of India, a sit-in protest was staged in collaboration with the Meira Paibi of Thangmeiband Khomdram Selungba Leirak at the local Meira shed, here, on Sunday.
Speaking on the sidelines, STDCM Women Wing convenor RK Tharaksana recalled that various protests and rallies have been held/taken out over the last decade demanding inclusion of Meetei/Meitei in the ST List.
The people are only demanding their constitutional right for the Meetei/Meitei as an indigenous community and come under the purview of ST.
Although the ministers and MLAs of the ruling government justified the demand during a meeting on Sunday, no action has been taken up till date.
In Manipur, 92 percent of the land is inhabited by only the hill brethren but the remaining area, which forms the valley, is inhabited by various non-indigenous communities, which has raised concerns on the survival of the indigenous populace.
The movement was taken up to prevent the disappearance of Meetei/Meitei community and as such, it is lamentable for the government to continue feigning ignorance instead of making its stand clear on the issue to the people once and for all, she remarked.
During the sit-in, the protestors held placards and banners inscribed with slogans like Include Meetei/Meitei in ST List', 'Save indigenous Meetei/Meitei community', Forward recommendation for inclusion of Meetei/Meitei in ST list, etc.
