Goods ferrying trucks were stoned by blockade supporters today while heading to Imphal with security escorts near Makhan village along the NH-39.An attempt to set ablaze a truck was also foiled by escort personnel.
The Senapati District Students' Association (SDSA) after shortening its five day chakka bandh on the Imphal-Mao section of the NH-39 to two days, commenced its indefinite economic blockade from yesterday (Tuesday) in protest against government failure to translate into work the agreed demand for repairing works of the highway portion from Senapati district headquarters to Mao which is in a woeful state.
Today, state security force escorted back a total of 150 goods ferrying trucks stranded beyond Mao gate on Nagaland side owing to the indefinite blockade since the commencement of chakka bandh on January 31 .
A total of 150 goods laden trucks stranded at Khuzuma on Nagaland side before reaching Mao gate of Manipur have proceeded to Imphal with security escort this afternoon at around 2 pm, police report received here from Mao gate said.
Personnel of 2nd Manipur Rifles under the command of assistant commandant Md Latif is escorting the trucks amidst apprehensions of attack by the blockade supporters on the way.
Trucks were stoned by blockade supporters before reaching Makhan village towards Imphal from the uphill side causing damage to windshields of around five trucks, the report said.
No casualty was reported to the truckers in the stoning.
An attempt to set ablaze one of the trucks was foiled by the security escorts who put the fire off.
Blockade supporters attempted to torch the vehicle by igniting the tarpaulin covering the back portion of the truck.
Normal movement of vehicles along the stretch of the Imphal-Mao section of the NH-39 in Senapati district has been disturbed since last Sunday with the commencement of chakka bandh strike imposed by the Senapati District Students' Association (SDSA).
After shortening the proposed five day chakka bandh, the students body proceeded on their stir with indefinite economic blockade.
The SDSA has imposed the bandh in protest against government failure to translate into action the agreement signed with the government with regard to the repairing of highly deteriorated condition of the stretch of the highway portion in Senapati district and opening of two fire service station at Maram and Tadubi.
