Chandel say no to Chakpi Project

Imphal, March 25, 2013:
Responding to the call of Chandel District Christian Forum, an apex inter- church organization, thousands of people took out a rally at Chandel district headquarters today to register their protest against the proposed construction of Chakpi multi-purpose project.
Prior to the rally, a public meeting was also held at Japhou Bazar, where many public leaders expressed their strong objection to the decision of the State Govt to go ahead with the construction of the proposed Chakpi multipurpose project and pointed out that the project would lead to destruction of natural resources including flora and fauna of the region on which the people depend for their livelihood.
After the rally, a memorandum was also submitted to the Prime Minister of India through the Deputy Commissioner, Chandel, highlighting the grievances of the people as well as seeking intervention for stopping the State Government from its proposed construction of the 78m high and 570m wide proposed Chakpi Dam that would lead to submergence of 916.54 hactares of land apart from another 611.08 hactares through construction roads and colonies.
The copies of the memorandum signed jointly by Rev Deaconson Langhu, President of Chandel District Christian and Rev Halpu Yulhung General Secretary, Chandel District Christian Forum have also been forwarded to the Union Ministers concerned, Chief Minister of the State, IFC Minister and MLAs of Chandel district.
