Fitting tributes paid to June 18 Martyrs

Imphal, June 18 2012:
Remembering the June 18 incident in which 18 people sacrificed their lives for the cause of protecting the territorial integrity of Manipur, thousands of people from all walks of life today paid rich floral tributes at the Kekrupat memorial complex, where the mortal remains of the 'martyrs' were laid to rest.
Offering of floral tributes commenced since 7 am today with family members of the 'martyrs', leaders and volunteers of both UCM and AMUCO leading the rest.
Artistes of Kanglei Indigenous Martial Arts and Cultural Society also offered sword salute to the 18 'martyrs' at the occasion.
Titular King of Manipur Leishemba Sanajaoba, PHED Minister I Hemochandra, Commerce and Industries Minister Gobindas Konthoujam, Works Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar, Social Welfare Minister Ak Mirabai, Agricultuire Minister Abdul Nasir, MLA N Biren, MLAs O Landhoni, Kh Jaykishan, Rk Imo, Karam Thamarjit, Elangbam Chand, and N Bira were among other prominent personalities who turned up to pay homage alongside Shumang Leela artists, film stars and people of different communities including Nagas, Kukis, Kabuis, Meeteis and Meetei Muslims.

To mark the occasion, a blood donation camp was also jointly organised by Voluntary Help Unit Committee, RIMS Hospital and RIMS Hospital Immuno- Hematology and Blood Transfusion at the Blood Bank of RIMS hospital.
Around 38 volunteers including 34 males and 4 females, donated blood.
On account of the commemorative event, all the business establishments in Imphal area remained shut down and the roads wore deserted look.
Entry of vehicles was also prohibited in certain areas.
Attendance in Government offices were also reported to be thin and all educational institutions and Gauhati High Court remained closed down for the day.
Meanwhile, Jiri Ima Meira Paibi Apunba Lup (JIMPAL) reportedly observed the Great June Uprising at Jiribam and observed two minutes silence as mark of respect to the June 18 martyrs.
Kh Ratan, President of JIMPAL and S Sushila, President of All Jiribam Meira Paibi were respectively Chief Guest and President of the observance function which was also attended by Sarat Sharma, Vice President of JIMPAL and E Devan of AMSU, Jiribam district Committee as Guests of Honour.
