DESAM volunteers gherao CM's bungalow

Imphal, November 12 2016: Volunteers of the Democratic student's Alliance of Manipur today gheraoed the Chief Minister Bungalow demanding befitting action against the police personnel involved in alleged manhandling of DESAM president and other volunteers in the custody of Singjamei police station.

At around 2 pm today, DESAM volunteers marched toward the Chief Minister's bungalow.

Police personnel who were on duty at different locations along the way tried to block the students.

However, the protesting students outnumbered police and they overcame police barricades.

After reaching the Chief Minister's bungalow, the agitating volunteers of DESAM staged a protest in front of the main entrance gate by blocking the road.

They squatted there in the middle of the road.

Soon after, a team of Imphal police station along with women police personnel arrived at the spot and pushed back the students away from the Chief Minister's bungalow.

Later all the agitating students were pushed back up to the Nupi Lan complex.

Speaking to media persons, DESAM general Secretary N Edison said that they have demanding the State Government to take up befitting action against the police personnel involved in manhandling and alleged brutal third degree torture of DESAM president M Angamba and four other volunteers inside Singjamei police station on October 29 .

N Edison, DESAM vice-president A Anand and DESAM advisor W Islauddin were allowed to meet Chief Minister O Ibobi.

But due to the Chief Minister's busy schedule, the DESAM leaders held a meeting Home Minister Gaikhangam instead.

Edison said that they would launch intense modes of agitation if the Government fails to take up action regarding their demands at the earliest.

He further accused some police personnel of manhandling the women volunteers of DESAM during the confrontation that broke out today.

Two students twisted their ankles and received minor injuries.

Edison said that they demanded Home Minister to enquire into the incident and that the inquiry should be carried out by an officer not below the Rank of DIG.

The inquiry report has to be submitted within 15 days from the day the order of inquiry is issued.

The Home Minister reportedly responded positively and assured them to issue an enquiry order by Monday.
