For the first time in Manipur, State Public Health Food Testing under Medical Directorate has begun conducting mobile food testing at Samumakhong, Khwairamband Keithel from today.
An eight-member team of State Public Health Food Testing headed by Technical Officer Athokpam Bihari collected samples of food items sold at Khwairamband Keithel and conducted food testing on a 'Food Safety on Wheels' mobile van to check whether the food items are safe to consume or not.
Speaking to media persons, Bihari conveyed that State Health Food Safety made an appeal to the Central Government to provide two 'Food Safety on Wheels' mobile vans to conduct food testing.

He said that the Central Government provided one 'Food Safety on Wheels' mobile van so far and the same was launched by Chief Minister N Biren on the occasion of World AIDS Day observation.
He informed that the mobile van will conduct food testing in different parts of the State, including Moreh and Kasom Khullen.
The team collected details of owners of the food stalls.
Legal action will be taken up against those who sold adulterated food items, he said.
He elaborated that the mobile food testing is being conducted as many food sellers fail to bring samples of their food items to the Food Safety Laboratory for testing.
Apart from conducting simple tests for common adulterants in milk, water, edible oil and other items of food of daily consumption, the 'Food Safety on Wheels' mobile van would also be used for awareness on food safety, hygiene and promoting healthy eating habits amongst the people.
