National Handloom Day

As observed across the country, National handloom day was also observed by the District Handlooms and Textiles Office, Senapati at Tumuyon Khullen Cluster.
The observance programme was graced by Nongthombam Nilabantajit, project manager, District Handlooms and Textiles Office, Senapati, T Jivanchandra, senior designer, District Handlooms and Textiles Office, Senapati and Dailia, senior weaver, as presidium members.
N Nilabantajit said that the day has been annually observed in remembrance of the mass public meeting held in the wake of Swadeshi Movement 1905 in Calcutta, now known as Kolkata.
Handloom sector is the main contributor to country's economic growth next to agriculture sector.
Deliberating on its immense importance both in the history of India and economy growth, the Indian Government has decided to observe August 7 as the National Handloom Day, Nilabantajit said.
He added the observance programme has also been organised at Willong Handloom Cluster and Kangpokpi Handloom Cluster.
Three weavers who attended the training programme held recently were also feted by Nilabantajit for their enthusiastic participation.
As part of the programme, apparels were presented to Kanglatongbi Children Home by a team of officials led by Nilabantajit.
