Imphal, June 02 2015 :
In a bid to save Angal Ching Eco-Park, Kakching, Biodiversity Ecology and Environment Network Manipur (BeeNet), Kakching has appealed to the authorities concerned not to destruct the park in the name of developmental activities.
Speaking at a press conference, BeetNet secretary S Bhubol said that the park is home to many indigenous plants, of which more than 150 trees possess rich medicinal and cultural values.
He further said that it is now known to the general public that the park has provided a ray of hope towards conserving these rare plant varieties for the future generation.
The park is not only popular to the people of the State but also to many environmentalists hailing from different parts of the country as a home to rare and indigenous plants, he added.
On the other hand, the park is presently serving the people of the State as a place of peace and natural beauty, he added.
Expressing concern over the proposed plan of the Manipur State Power Distribution Company Limited to set up a 33/11 KV power sub-station at the Dag No 188 of the said park, Bhubol said that large number of endangered trees are growing at the area where the power sub-station is proposed to be set up.
Saying that the hard labour of 10 years, which has been spent in conserving and preserving these trees, would become meaningless if these trees are cut down now in the name of development, he urged the authorities concerned to look into the matter and find another place for the power sub-station.
Saying that every developmental work must be executed after conducting an environmental impact assessment, he said that there is plenty of land adjacent to the park for setting up of the power sub-station.
