Convention introspects on dilution of Kabui identity

Expressing deep concern on the alarming dilution of identity, language, culture and traditions of Kabui tribe in the valley areas and the State as a whole, Kabui Kariumei Phom (KKP) president Dr Heera Malangmei Kabui has called for sincere efforts from all leaders and community members towards preserving and protecting the value systems, identity and traditions of Kabui tribe.
Heera who attended the function as the functional president was speaking to media persons on the sideline of the Kabui People's Convention which was organized by KKP, Mahabali Kabui, Imphal at Gandhi Memorial Hall here today.
Asserting that the Kabui tribe faces constant threats in terms of declining population and dilution of identity, language, culture and traditions, the KKP president went on to inform that the State has a Kabui population of around two lakhs, including around 80,000 residing in the valley.
He pointed out that ignorance among the present generation of Kabui people about their culture, traditions, language and other age-old values and conversion to other communities/tribes are the main factors for the decline in Kabui population.
Saying that it is high time for all members of Kabui tribe to launch a strong movement for protecting, preserving and promoting their identity, culture, language and other such values; Heera conveyed that the Kabui People's Convention which was held today is an endeavour towards the same objective.
He also recounted the origin of Kabui tribe and stated that the community is an indigenous community of the State and they cannot be separated from the history of Manipur.
The president added that Kabui tribe as an indigenous community has been taking great interest in keeping the State's identity intact.
The function was also attended by Kabui Samiti, Manipur working president PG Makuningpou Kabui, Namgaakpou, Ragailong Pei K Gaingamlung Kabui, Zeliangrong Union (Assam, Manipur, Nagaland) vice president R Chandra Haomei and Kabui Mothers' Association president K Atongpi Kabui as the chief guest and guests of honor.
