A two-day training programme on Practical Approaches for conservation of Bio-resources in North East India began from today at the Institute of Bio-resources and Sustainable Development, Takyelpat, Imphal.
Director of Science and Technology Dr S Madhusudan and Scientist in- charge IBSD Dr PSSV Khan attended the inaugural function as chief guest and president respectively.
In his address, Dr Madhusudan stressed on the importance of Biotechnology and said it is gaining more relevance now-a-days.
Biotechnological research should be done to generate employment for the local people; he said and pointed out that research protocols should be able to translate into meaningful products.
He also informed that the State Govt, specially hi department is looking for suitable land for IBSD and would definitely expend co- operation in the development of basic research infrastructure like provision of water supply to the Institute.
In his presidential address, Dr Khan mentioned that the people of NE region should be the custodians of the rich bio-resources and traditional knowledge.
They should be fully conscious of its conservation and sustainable utilisation of this bio-resources and traditional knowledge for the socio-economic development of the region through involvement of advanced tools like Biotechnology, Bioinformatics and Fermentation technology.
