Imphal, February 16 2011:
In continuation of its anti narcotics drive, troops of Loktak Brigade under Red Shield Division, destroyed approximately 159 acres of illegal poppy cultivation in Nabil Khuman Village area along the Thangjing Ridge in Churachandpur district, Joupi village in Senapati District and areas of Zouyangtek in Tamenglong district from February 9 to 14 .
Development and road communication is almost non-existent in these remote areas and thus they are almost non accessible to the civil administration and Narcotics Bureau officials.
The Loktak Brigade has been actively involved in this activity from the past 30 days and has been successful in destroying poppy plants which would have yielded raw material for opium worth many crores of rupees in the open market.
The people of the nearby villages have also been incorporated in eradicating this menace and have been counseled and encouraged to grow alternate crops for livelihood.
The Army has been trying to eradicate problems faced by the locals in these villages through various military civic action activities.
