Cycle rally against Mapithel Dam

Various civil organisations and students today organised a cycle rally cum public meeting at Kakching Khunou Umathel to protest the construction of Mapithel Dam by the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, reports our correspondent.
Memoranda in this regard were also submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Minister of Tribal Affairs Jual Oram, Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi and Governor KK Paul.
People in the area have been protesting the blocking of Thoubal river flowing along Imphal East and Ukhrul districts by the Irrigation and Flood Control Department for the construction work of Mapithel Dam.
The cycle rally was flagged off from Pangantabai village and concluded at Umathel Awang Leikai community hall where a public meeting was held.
Mapithel Dam Affected Villages Organisation president Rockson, social worker Kh Rajnikanta Meitei and founder of Hijam Irabot Memorial School, Umathel, Kh Rajen Singh were the presidium members during the meeting.
Centre for Research and Advocacy (CRA) Manipur secretary Jiten Yumnam, Mapithel Dam Affected Villages Villages Organisation (MDAVO) secretary Dominic Kashung, United NGOs Mission, Manipur, secretary U Nobokishor and Women Action for Development (WAD) Sobita Mangshatabam also attended the meeting.
