Imphal, March 27 2015 :
Janata Dal-United (JD-U), Manipur unit has blamed the Government for the acute water shortage being endured by people of the State.
JD-U Manipur unit president M Tombi said that people are facing a serious crisis of water scarcity on account of the Government's policy failures.
Speaking to some media persons at their Babupara office today, M Tombi asserted that people would not have faced the existing crisis of water shortage had the Government learnt some lessons from the past experience and taken up some pre-emptive measures.
Priceless volumes of water go waste as the Government has no plan to harvest or stock water for lean season even though average annual rainfall rate of Manipur is higher than the all India average.
It's time for the Government to take up necessary measures to tackle possible outbreak of water borne diseases as people are now compelled to use raw or untreated water.
PHED officials should test the quality of water being sold by private water tankers.
At the same time, private water tankers should provide waters which are safe for human consumption.
The situation demands the Government to formulate a long term policy for harvesting rain water.
Concerned authorities should also check the practice of tapping water from main water pipelines directly using water pumps.
JD-U Manipur unit secretary general Lien Gangte said that people in hill districts are also facing water scarcity.
People have been facing the problem of water scarcity because of the Government's failure to frame a scientific water policy, Lien decried.
