VDF personnel call 24-hr bandh

A 24-hour State wide bandh called by the All Manipur VDF Welfare Association (AMVDFWA) has begun from Friday midnight.
The general strike has been enforced by the association to mount pressure on the State Government to implement its demands.
The VDF association in a press statement also demanded unconditional release of the 16 personnel of the force arrested by the police on March 25 .
It demanded that all the seized 40 vehicles�bikes and scooters�belonging to other personnel of the force should also be handed to the owners.
On March 25, police here resorted to lathi charge to disperse hundreds of VDF personnel who were staging a protest rally under the banner of AMVDFWA, injuring several of them.
The police also arrested 16 VDF personnel and seized 40 vehicles from the protestors.
The VDF took out to the streets against the State Government for failing to meet their demands.

There are currently 10,500 VDF personnel attached to Manipur Police.
AMVDFWA has been demanding honorarium hike and service security.
The statement condemned the March 25 incident and informed that the VDF are giving up democratic agitations since the Government has allegedly chosen to remain silent on their plight.
It vowed that the association will go on strike until its demands are met.
An indefinite economic blockade will follow the 24-hour general strike, it said.
The association warned that the State Government should own up any unwanted incident that occurs during the strike.
Meanwhile, the All Manipur VDF Guardian Association has threatened to boycott the State Government if demands of the AMVDFWA are ignored further.
In a statement the association further condemned the March 25 incident wherein several VDF personnel were hurt in police action.
It pledged to extend support to AMVDFWA in enforcing the 24-hour Manipur wide bandh.
