Spice processing unit inaugurated

Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation Director K Kipgen inaugurated an Organic Spice Processing Unit for ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre, Imphal, at Mantripukhri today.
Dr N Prakash, Joint Director, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre also attended the inaugural function.
The processing unit has been established with the financial and technical assistance from ICAR under Tribal Sub-Plan and will be run by Grassroot Syndicate Producer Co.
Ltd., a sister organization of Diocesan Social Service Society, Imphal.
The unit will be producing organic turmeric, ginger and chilli under the brand name 'Country Farm' .

Dr S S Roy, Scientist (Horticulture); Dr Kh Rishikanta Singh, Scientist (Agril.
Economics), Dr Chongtham Tania, Scientist (Horticulture) and S K Raman, Programme Coordinator (KVK-Imphal West) and other staff from ICAR and KVKs also attended the occasion.
Speaking at the occasion, K Kipgen, Director, Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation, Government of Manipur, congratulated the Grassroot Syndicate, DSSS and ICAR for taking such initiative.
He also elaborated on the prospects of organic spices in North Eastern region.
Dr N Prakash, Joint Director, ICAR, explained the activities of ICAR under Tribal Sub-Plan for the benefit of farming communities and also the importance of small scale processing units in rural areas.
Dr S S Roy who is also the Nodal Officer (TSP) of ICAR said ICAR has established nine small scale processing units in various districts this year.
The unit that was inaugurated today is one of the first organic spice processing units in Imphal.
