Imphal, March 25 2022:
Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA) organised an awareness programme in association with The Thoubal District United Women's Development Organisation (Thoubal Ima) and Chairel Panthoibi Marup at Chairel Khongnang Leikai, Kakching district around 2 pm today.
As per a statement, the awareness programme was on the topic of people's responsibility in curbing the widespread consumption of illicit substances.
Speaking on the occasion, Mayengbam Budhi, Secretary organisation, CADA stressed on frequent hauls of large drug consignments stating that this points at a ballooning number of drug smugglers in the state.
However, despite such frequent seizures, the real perpetrators behind the major drug rings are never apprehended, he added.
He expressed concern over the non-implementation of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 and the ineffectiveness of fast track courts in this regard.
Mayengbam Budhi further opined that the administration's 'War of Drugs' campaign will not succeed in removing the scourge of drugs from our society elaborating that this campaign is not based on effective policies but superficial eyewash like cutting down poppy plants to appease the public.
Adding to this, he stated that despite destroying the poppy plants, the owners of the poppy plantations were never apprehended.
And as such, the 'War on Drugs' campaign is meaningless, he maintained.
