Imphal, February 03, 2011:
A fund amounting to Rs.1876 crore meant for modernization of Imphal city under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) has been blocked by the Centre under the influence of the BJP national leaders.
A source in the BJP, Manipur Pradesh said that the fund which the Centre had agreed to release to the state was blocked after BJP national leaders convinced Prime Minister Dr Manmohon Singh not to do so.
National vice-president, Bijoya Chakarborty was among the leaders who met the PM.
They convinced the PM that some ministers of the SPF government in collusion with of their close associate officers prepared the project report in their own interest, the source said.
The Imphal Municipal Council has been put under suspension by levelling false charges against the councillors so that they could bypass the civic body making the ministers and officers in question to handle the project, the source maintained.
Mention may be made that IMC has been put under suspension for six months by an order of the state government issued on August 10, 2010.BJP sees the suspension as a hidden agenda of some ministers and their close officials so as to supervise the utilization of funds that were to be released by the Centre under JNNURM.
BJP considers that a revocation of the suspension order and fresh elections were mooted by the SPF government before the suspension period was due to expire by February 8, the source reminded.
The SPF government felt it would be unfair to put an elected civic body under suspension for a long period since its only intention was to siphon off the huge funds released for urban development, the BJP source disclosed.
The BJP expects that the SPF government will take a decision for dissolution of the IMC so that fresh elections can be held.
Keeping this in mind the party has started shortlisting candidates.
