Imphal, February 03, 2011:
"The Congress party wins elections with the power of money and muscle", former Union minister Th Chaoba said on the occasion of the 28th death anniversary observance of Aihaj Md Alimuddin, former Manipur chief minister, at the Manipur Peoples' Party (MPP) office complex.
"No one can point out the exactly three assembly constituencies from among the 60 assembly constituencies in the State from where the Congress might emerge victorious, although the chief minister and his wife may win from their respective constituencies.
The people of Manipur are a confused lot", said Chaoba.
He went on to write a swansong about the Congress saying, "It has lost its supremacy everywhere; the biggest example is the Bihar Assembly election where only four Congress candidates were elected although they contested in almost all the assembly seats in the State".
He said that under the able leadership of the late Alimuddin, the people of Manipur attained statehood in 1972 and prospered thereafter.
Now there is a sense of vacuum for want of leadership to rescue the State which has fallen deeper into a quagmire of corruption.
"We need to change Manipur by defeating the Congress in the forthcoming by-election to Konthoujam assembly constituency and demonstrate that the power of money has outlived its utility," he said.
The last 20 years have witnessed the supremacy of Congress, but then the party has failed on all fronts such as education, infrastructure, public distribution, etc.
While other States of the country are developing exponentially, Manipur has increasingly been dragged backwards, the ex-minister said.
MPP president in-charge Y Mangi said on the occasion that everyone is witnessed to the period of prosperity during the rule of MPP, therefore "if we want to salvage Manipur from throes of corruption and fake encounters, the public have to take exemplary decision in defeating the Congress in the forthcoming by-election".
MLA O Joy, Ibomcha, general secretary MPP and M Maniton, youth MPP president were also present at the occasion besides other dignitaries.
