Social Welfare Department to make Govt Departments' websites disabled friendly

Social Welfare Director Ng Uttam Singh Tuesday conveyed that the Social Welfare Department in collaboration with IT Department is planning to upgrade the official websites of all the State Government Departments in a disabled friendly manner.
He was addressing a training programme on implementation of Unique ID (UDID) for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) Project in Manipur which was jointly organized by Social Welfare Department, GoM and Department of Empowerment of Persons With Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, GoI at City Convention, Palace Compound, Imphal.
The Director went on to inform that the fund for taking up the said initiatives is with the department while stating that a formal letter has already been sent to the IT Department by the Social Welfare Department asking it to make a proper assessment on the requirements for the project.
The Social Welfare Department is also tying up with NEILIT, Akampat to impart computer knowledge to 200 visually impaired people initially.
This will be carried out in phase manner.
Initially planned to begin from June 14, the programme has been postponed for some time due to technical issues in preparing Braille script, he said.
Maintaining that the Social Welfare Department in convergence with National Rural Livelihood Mission has even reserved 3 percent for PWDs in skill development programmes implemented under the said programme, Uttam further claimed that more number of skill development programmes for PWDs will be taken up in the State as Social Welfare Department has also tied up with Manipur Society for providing skill development programme to PWDs.
As UDID Project will be made available online, one can apply for the programme from anywhere.
Furthermore, the programme will create an avenue for transparency, efficiency and ease of service delivery to PWDs besides bringing uniformity in issuing IDs to PWDs, he added.
DEPWD, MOSJE, GoI Under Secretary DK Panda, State Commissioner for PWDs, Manipur Dr RK Kumarjit, CMOS and Social Welfare Officers among others also attended the event.
