MPCB plans to reduce noise and air pollution by March 2018

Chairman of Manipur Pollution Control Board, L Radhakishore has assured to reduce the noise pollution and air pollution levels in the surrounding areas of Imphal by the month of March, next year.
He made the statement at a press meet at his office at Lamphelpat today.
Speaking to media persons he said that the Department has conceived a system to reduce the noise, air and water pollution in Imphal city and its surrounding areas but it will not be successful without support from the public.
He also informed that the Department, under the aegis of the Central Pollution Control Board, have taken up steps for collecting and measuring the water samples from more than 70 water bodies in the State.
Water samples were collected from eight different water bodies today, including Sekmai, Koirengei, Minuthong, Mahabali and Kiyamgei part of Imphal river, Kangla Siphai of Iril river and Wangkhei Ningthem Pukhri.
The reports of Minuthong (Imphal river) and Porompat (Iril nver) as well as Ningthem Pukhri have arrived.
It show increased rate of pollution at Ningthem Pukhri although the two river bodies remain relatively clean as per the report.
The report will be sent to CPCB and necessary steps will be taken up to decrease the pollution, the chairman added.
The chairman also pointed out that similar investigation/ surveys will be carried out at 14 locations at Imphal West, 7 locations at Bishnupur district, 2 locations at Churachandpur, 12 at Thoubal, 2 at Ukhrul, 1 at Tamenglong, 2 at Senapati and 3 at Chandel.
Radhakishore also conveyed that he has come across various setback in the MPCB office including lack of staff and necessary equipment.
He further stated that around Rs 2.11 crore has been sanctioned for organising various pollution awareness programmes at schools and colleges in the State.
Replying to a query, he said that it is against the law to equip or mod aftermarket silencer to vehicles which generate lots of noise and necessary steps will be taken up to monitor such cases.
