Imphal, May 02 2012:
The portrait of Anglo-Kuki War (1917-1919) hero, Ngulkhup Haokip was fixed today at Kuki Inn along side other heroes like Chengjapao, Tintong, Enjakhup etc.
The contribution of Ngulkhup Haokip in offering resistance to the imperial British army in the war reverberated today during the portrait fixture programme organised today by the Kuki Independence War Memorial Committee, Imphal at Kuki Inn.
The then British Political Agent, Col HWG Cole had demanded Pu Ngulkhup Haokip the then chief of Lonpi (Mombi), to select men for labour corps during the WW-I in France.
Ngulkhup Haokip had vehemently resisted the demand of the British.
Later Col Cole had sent her wife down till Sugnu Bunglow to convice the chief by offering him with many endowments which the former rejected which resulted in a war between the two parties.
86 Kuki villages were burnt down in the course of the war while 15 other village were uprooted.
"He was very much a hero of the Anglo-Kuki war," said Apao Haokip, co-opted member of the KIWMC.
His protrait could not be found, hence it could be fixed now only thanks to Khupsei Haokip of Lonpi (Mombi) village who come across the photo of the Hero recently, Apao said.
Fitting trumpet salute and floral tribute were offered to the portrait of the war hero during the fixing ceremony today.
