Imphal, January 21, 2012:
Sensing possible subversive activities from Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) in the run up and during the ensuing Assembly election, DGP Y Baral has written to the GOC 57 Mountain Division, Major General Benoy Poonen to open some extra army posts.
According to a report received belatedly, the DGP, in a letter, informed the GOC that around 100 cadres of ZUF have been operating in Tamenglong, Churachandpur and Bishnupur.
It also hinted about possible subversive activities like interference in election process, extortion, abduction of candidates/supporters and attacks on security forces.
The DGP also cautioned that gun battles may break out between NSCN-IM and ZUF.
Highlighting all these possibilities, the DGP wrote to the GOC to open temporary army posts in such places as Khoupum, Zoujangtek and Dollang Chiru.
Last year a gun fight between the ZUF cadres and NSCN (IM) had resulted in the death of a number of IM's cadres at Tamenglong district.
