Imphal, January 21, 2012:
Manipur today celebrated its 41st Statehood Day with Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh gracing the celebration at the Secretariat South Block conference hall as the chief guest.
Expressing that people of Manipur realised their long cherished aspiration when Statehood was granted on this day in 1972, the Chief Minister described the day as a historic occasion.
Recounting that after prolonged existence under the British rule since 1891 Manipur enjoyed a brief period of 'independence' before its merger to the Indian union on October 15, 1949 Ibobi said Manipur's administration came under the domain of an Advisory Council in 1950-51, which was established under the then Chief Commissioner.
In 1957, the Advisory Council was replaced with the election of a 32-member council followed by grant of Union Territory status in 1963.

He further added that including one representative in the Rajya Sabha, Manipur is represented in the Parliament of India by three MPs.
Conveying that role of the public is an important component for smooth and successful governance, Ibobi also appealed to the people to contribute their mite in the overall development of Manipur.
Top civil and police officials were also present at the Statehood Day celebration, during which artistes of Shri Shri Bal Mukund Music College presented patriotic numbers.
