Green Zone, Imphal and Vegetable Nest, Lamjao jointly held a one-day workshop on 'enrichment of organic farming' at the conference hall of State Guest House, Sanjenthong today.
Chief guest of the event, social worker Dr Y Radheshyam Singh elaborated on the ill effects of using chemical fertilizers in farming.
Crops/vegetables treated with chemical fertilizers not only decay faster than the untreated ones but they also pose a threat to health, Dr Radheshyam stated.
"Farmers should opt for organic farming.
It is healthier compared to the chemically treated vegetables," he opined.
Former MU Registrar Dr RK Ranjan, during his speech, said farmers should be careful while using chemical fertilizers on their crops as it adversely affects human health.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier declared a sum of Rs 100 crore to promote organic farming in the North East.
Dr Ranjan has further called for mass co-operation from the people in promoting organic farming in the State.
