Imphal, August 08, 2014:
Taking strong exception to indefinite closure of Manipur University hostels, All Tribal Students Union Manipur (ATSUM) has urged the varsity authority to enforce the Central Educational Institutions (Reservations in Admission) Amendment Act 2012 at the earliest.
Speaking at a press conference held at Nagaram, ATSUM president Muan Tombing said that it is unfortunate to close MU hostels indefinitely as it has given lots of inconvenience to students who come from interior areas.
While appealing for necessary attention to the issue Tombing urged the varsity authority to restore academic atmosphere at the earliest.
Tombing said that 50 students are still staying at Youth Hostel, Khuman Lampak.
It may be mentioned that six students were injured after police fired tear gas shells and rubber bullets on students as they protested MU authority's sudden notification of closure of hostel on August 6. Demanding enforcement of the Central Educational Institutions (Reservations in Admission) Ammendment Act 2012 at Manipur University, Tombing said that the varsity has suppressed the rights of tribal students with the delay of around two years in the implementation of the Amendment Act.
Tombing further cautioned that ATSUM would not remain silent if the Act is not enforced at the earliest.
