Imphal, August 08, 2014:
Together with police, IFCD has launched a special demolition drive of removing all kinds of structures including houses, crematoriums and kitchen gardens built on river beds.
Assisted by engineers, IFCD Minister Ngamthang Haokip launched the demolition drive along the Imphal river course starting from Minuthong to Sanjenthong.
Notably IFCD has already issued notifications asking all concerned to remove houses, crematoriums, shops and kitchen gardens built on the beds/banks of Imphal river, Iril river, Kongba river and Nambul river.
Talking to media persons about the demolition drive, Ngamthang Haokip maintained that construction of houses, shops, crematoriums, toilets and other structures obstruct water current and they often bring about floods during rainy season.
Even as notifications were issued in advance to remove all the existing structures including kitchen gardens, most of the structures have not been removed.

That was why, IFCD launched the demolition drive with the help of State Police.
The same drive would be carried out along the courses of other rivers too one after another, Ngamthang Haokip said.
He also appealed to all the people to remove voluntarily all the structures built on river beds in the interest of the State.
In case, people refuse to remove the existing structures, the department would demolish all the structures under relevant provisions of the Manipur Flood Plain Joining Act 1978. He also sought people's cooperation to the department's new initiative instead of posing hurdles.
