NPP members upset with conduct of party MLAs
Source: Chronicle News Service

Imphal, September 21 2022: Amid the changing political landscape of the state, several members of National People's Party (NPP) are unhappy with the conduct of the party's MLAs and raised question on the MLAs treating the party as a launch pad for winning election only.

The party fielded 39 candidates in the election to the 12th Manipur legislative assembly held in February and March this year out of which seven won their respective seats.

The winning candidates are Sheikh Nurool Hassan of Kshetrigao AC, Khuraijam Loken of Wangoi AC, Irengbam Nalini of Oinam AC, Thongam Shanti of Moirang AC, Mayanglambam Rameshwar of Kakching AC, Janghemlung Panmei of Tamenglong AC and N Kayisii of Tadubi AC.

In the run up to the election, the party's national president and Meghalaya chief minister expressed confidence of emerging as the single largest party and leading the next coalition government of the state.

However, their dream was shattered when only seven candidates could win and the party, as a member of NDA, extended support to the BJP government.

Some of the winning candidates were BJP ticket seekers, who had to come under the NPP to fight the election.

Apart from the winning candidates, many of the candidates, who had lost the election, and party members have true intention of joining the party as they regard the party as a strong national party of the northeast region originated from Manipur.

A reliable source said that the party holds executive committee meeting every month to discuss the present situation and chalk out future planning for a better outcome in the next election by increasing the party's strength.

Unfortunately many of the NPP MLAs have been skipping this monthly meeting thereby creating a sense of uncertainty among the party members.

Questions are being raised among the party members if the MLAs are treating the party as an emergency landing pad for their political gain by exploiting the new trust the party has gained recently.

In the backdrop of five out of six JD-U MLAs joiningBJP recently, NPP members are worried if some of the NPP MLAs are also planning to shift loyalty BJP.

While the party is planning to field candidates in both inner and outer parliamentary constituencies in the forthcoming 2024 Lok Sabha election, some of the NPP MLAs are displaying uneasiness in fielding candidates.

Considering the emerging situation, many party members are feeling a sense of uncertainty over the fate of the party in the state, the source added.
