CM distributes ex-gratia to family of landslide victims

Imphal, July 11 2022: Chief minister N Biren on Monday distributed ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the next kin of the victims of landslide that occurred in between Saihum and Santing villages in Henglep sub-division of Churachandpur district on July 8.Cheques of the said amount were handed over to families of two deceased persons namely Buotsai, daughter of Sangkhum, and Lalnunzir, wife of Malsawmlien of Sipuikawn under Parbung sub-division in Pherzawl district.

Financial Assistance of Rs 50,000 and Rs 10,000 were also handed over respectively to family members of the five persons who suffered seriously injured and the other five persons with minor injuries.

Speaking on the occasion held at his Secretariat office, CM Biren expressed deep condolences to the families of two deceased and prayed for speedy recovery of the injured persons.

He continued that the ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh included Rs 1 lakh additional amount provided from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund and advised that the injured persons avail the benefits of Chief Minister-gi Hakshel-gi Tengbang (CMHT) if the financial assistance provided does not cover the treatment cost.

He appreciated the support of civil society organisations for extending all possible help in the rescue of persons affected by such natural calamities and appealed to the public to inform authority concerned if any untoward incident or natural calamity occurs affecting the lives of people.

Biren further informed that state government has a plan to constitute a committee comprising experts from Geological Survey of India and Manipur Remote Sensing Applications Centre (MARSAC) to conduct a survey of land in the hill areas to prevent loss of peoples lives due to landslides in future.

Relief and Disaster Management minister Awangbow Newmai, additional chief secretaries MH Khan and V Vumlunmang, officials of district administration of Churachandpur and Pherzawl, and Relief & Disaster Management department also attended the programme among others.

It may be mentioned that on July 8, a Bolero camper carrying 12 passengers was washed down a deep gorge after a landslide hit the vehicle near Saihum village while travelling from Leijangphal towards Churachandpur.
