Rev Mittathany passes away; CM condoles

The first Bishop of the Diocese of Imphal, Reverend Joseph Mittathany passed away on Monday at 9:55 am at Catholic Medical Centre, Koirengei.
He was 91.According to Archdiocese of Imphal Chancellor Fr Solomon Thezii, Reverend Joseph Mittathany was the Archbishop of Imphal from 1980 to 2006 and was instrumental in establishing several institutions and infrastructure in the field of education, healthcare and social services in Manipur.
The mortal remains of the Archbishop have been kept in St Joseph's Cathedral Church, Mantripukhri for public homage while the funeral service will take place on July 14 at 10 am, the Archdiocese said in a release.
While informing that the Catholic churches in Manipur will mourn the untimely demise of Mittathany till July 14 and all educational institutions under the Archdiocese of Imphal will remain closed during the mourning period, the release also said that all celebratory events, unless unavoidable, would remain suspended.
Meanwhile, chief minister N Biren expressed his deep condolences on the demise of Joseph Mittathany.
"During his lifetime, Rev Joseph Mittathany always worked for the betterment of the state and had played a crucial role in bringing development in the field of education, healthcare and social services besides erecting many ecclesiastical parishes.
His contributions to the society as a Church leader will always be remembered", the CM said in his condolence message.
The chief minister also conveyed his deepest condolences and shared the grief of the bereaved family while praying that God give them the strength to bear the great loss with courage and fortitude.
