World Population Day observed

Health and IPR Minister Dr S Ranjan Singh has said that accurate population data is necessary for formulation of policies.
The Minister made the remark while speaking at the occasion of World Population Day held at the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Lamphelpat today.
Dr S Ranjan maintained that the size of population and its age groups play an important role in deciding the future of the land and the people.
Sustainable development will depend on the existing pattern of demography.
There is also variation in population concentration and its distribution from State to State, community to community and also country to country, he added.
He added, "we need to discuss the population issue in two ways i.e.overpopulation and population collapse.
We need a balanced approach for both the issues" and added that the variation of fertility rate amongst communities may be focused.
The sustainability of fertility rate should be maintained, he added.
The Minister also informed that the true meaning and theme of the celebration of World Population Day should be understood by all.
The State Cabinet has also approved the creation of the post of Joint Director, Population in view of the close relationship that exists between demography, population and governance, he added.
He also flagged off a rally in connection with the World Population Day which was attended by the medical officials, staff and nursing students before the formal function started.
