Imphal, July 11 2022:
The 18th death anniversary of Thangjam Manorama, who was found brutally killed after being picked up from her house by Assam Rifles, was observed at her Bamon Kampu residence on Monday.
The observance organised by Thangjam Manorama Charitable Trust, her families and Working Committee of Apunba Lup was attended by Poirei Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi president L Memchoubi, Trust president Th Nilbir, PYC Bamon Kampu president Th Somananda and AMUCO president Nando Lu-wang as presidium members.
Speaking at the observance, Apunba Lup member Phulindro Konsam expressed strong resentment that many women of Manipur were killed by Indian Army and dignity of several others violated while uncountable number of people of the state were tortured and killed under the veil of the draconian AFSPA.
Of the excesses committed by security forces, the case of Thangjam Manorama was the most brutal and tragic, he maintained, and recounted that Manorama was arrested from her residence on July 10, 2004 brutally tortured and her lifeless body left abandoned the next day.
In order to remember the day her lifeless body was recovered, the observance is being held every year.
Pointing out that no personnel of 17 AR who were involved in the brutal incident have been punished by the law of the land, Phulindro maintained that people should not be satisfied with the scrapping of disturbed area tag from seven assembly segments by the government.
Such repeal of disturbed area tag is a part of a larger policy of India and people should critically examine it, he contended and made it clear that the demand of Apunba Lup and the people is complete repeal of AFSPA from the whole state.
