Govt to give Rs 5 lakh to Manipur Sahitya Parishad: CM

Chief Minister O Ibobi has announced on Sunday the annual grant amount given to the Manipur Sahitya Parsihad will be increased to Rs 5 lakh from the previous Rs 1 lakh.
Ibobi made this announcement while participating in the closing function of a two-day long celebration of the 80th annual meet of Manipur Sahitya Parishad at the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy auditorium here.
During the event the Chief Minister, who was the chief guest, distributed to 29 literary personalities the annual Upadhi Awards, cash awards and gold medals.
The awards carry headgear, shawl, memento, citation and cash.
Ibobi was surprised to learn that the annual grant amount given to Manipur Sahitya Parishad by the State Government had been fixed at Rs 1 lakh.
"I came to know today the previous amount of Rs 2 lakh has been decreased to Rs 1 lakh," he stated.
He announced that Rs 5 lakh would be given to the parishad now by the Government in recognition of its valuable contribution in the field of Manipuri literature.
Ibobi cited the popular saying "literature is the mirror of a society" and added that writers tell the past and present events of a society.
He lauded the State parishad as the foremost literary body in Manipur and expressed hope that men of literature of the State will pen more good books that can play an important role in shaping a good society.
The Chief Minister also assured that construction of the Cultural University of Manipur will start this year.
Manipur Sahitya Parishad president Prof Thoidingjam Tombi was the president and Planning & Development Authority (PDA) Chairman and MLA Tongbram Mangibabu was the guest of honour on the occasion.
