Manipur State Indigenous Open Wrestling Championship, 2025 begins in Senapati

Senapati, April 29 2025:
Manipur State Indigenous Open Wrestling Championship, 2025 began at Senapati Astro Turf Ground today.
The event is organised by the Senapati District Wrestling Association, Manipur (SDWAM) .
The inaugural function of the championship was graced by Thaithuilung Pamei, IAS, Commissioner, Seri/Horti, Govt of Manipur as the chief guest and Mamoni Doley, IAS, DC, Senapati as the guest of honour.
In his welcome note, DS Masounii, president, SDWAM stated that the indigenous wrestling is an integral part of Naga cultural heritage, showcasing strength, ability and communal bonding.
The sport promotes physical fitness, discipline and mental toughness, he added while urging all wrestlers to showcase their abilities and strength through good behaviour and good discipline throughout the games.
RK Gideon, General Secretary, SDWAM in his address said that the SDWAM was founded in 2000 to preserve and promote traditional games as well as to conduct events.
He said that the game was once played to resolve any conflict between different villages in the past.
But now, the game serves a platform to bring peace and provide a chance to visit different Naga villages.
Speaking at the occasion, Senapati DC, Mamoni Doley stated that the game involves a great deal of skill and strength while also showcasing the rich traditional heritage of the community.
The district is proud to host such an important event linked deeply with the identity and culture of Nagas, he said while lauding the people of Senapati for their endeavour to carry forward the legacy of their ancestors.
He also exuded confidence that the State Government will acknowledge the tireless efforts of the SDWAM and lend a helping hand in reviving the traditional sport and assured all forms of possible support from his end towards organising such an event.
Speaking as the chief guest, T Pamei observed the changing sports trend over time and said that wrestling is one of the most ancient games.
The Poumais, Maos and the Marams are the 3 major tribes in the district well known for the game, he said while calling upon the wrestlers to get into professionalism rather than practising it for just entertainment purposes.
He also stressed on the need for tapping young talents and providing them proper awareness and training so that they can excel in the State, National and international level events.
So many sports persons have brought pride to the country in various fields, he said while expressing his desire to see world class wrestlers from the district.
He also extended his best wishes to all the participants of the championship.
Notably, 58 wrestlers will vie for top honours in four different categories including - 14-15 years category; 16-17 years category; below 70 kg open and above 70 kg open.
Traditional horn blowing marked the beginning of the championship that will tun till May 2 .
