Imphal, November 20 2023:
Expressing deep concern over the detection of an unidentified flying object that suspended flight services for hours yesterday, NPP National vice president and ex Deputy CM Yumnam Joykumar has urged the Government to swiftly investigate and identify the mysterious flying object.
At the office of the NPP at Naoremthong, Joykumar said the sighting of the UFO within the airspace of the Bir Tikendrajit International Airport is a matter of great security concern.
Such incidents and objects pose a threat to the safety and security of the passengers, and is a security challenge for the State and the Nation as a whole, he said.
Drones and other UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) are used for surveillance and sometimes they are also used for carrying out attacks.
UAVs and drones are known to have been modified to carry explosives to be dropped on enemies.
The State and Central intelligence agencies and security at the airport must be strengthened to avoid all threats, he said.
Claiming that there have been reports of Kuki militants using drones for targeted bombing, he said the State Government should convene a meeting of the Security Council to effectively investigate and identify the flying object.
While the UFO was hovering above the airport for more than 3 hours, the Government has not said a word on the incident and is yet to identify the object, he said.
Notably, the UFO was spotted as a white object in high altitude above the Air Traffic Control at around 2.30 pm and it alerted the airport authority and prompted the Indian Air Force to scramble two Rafale fighter jets to track down the object.
The Rafale jets, however, couldn't spot the object, said reports.
Meanwhile, several flights were diverted and delayed for hours before resuming services at around 5.50 pm .
