Imphal, November 20 2023:
The Agriculture Department in association with Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) Imphal West organised a "Demonstration cum awareness of nano urea during Rabi 2023 and distribution of seeds for Rabi season 2023-24" at Sangaithel Makha Leikai community hall today.
The event was graced by RK Dinesh, Agriculture Commissioner, N Gojendro, Agriculture Director, Kennedy Singh, District Agriculture Officer Imphal West and other notable officials of the Department.
On the occasion, RK Dinesh and N Gojendro headed out to the agricultural fields of Sangaithel Makha Leikai and sowed mustard seeds to kick off the event.
One hundred and eleven hectares of arable land in Sangaithel Makha Leikai meant for cultivation of rapeseed and mustard was recognized as 'adopted village of rapeseed and mustard' during the awareness and seed distribution programme.
Speaking on the occasion, RK Dinesh stated that in an earlier effort under the Agriculture Department, mustard oil seeds were planted across 55 hectares in Sangaithel area.
In an increase from last year's effort, farmers have set the goal this year is to sow mustard oil seeds in 111 hectares, said Dinesh while urging the farmers to increase the yield of mustard oil production this year.
The Agriculture Commissioner also pointed out the tourism aspect of this initiative and added that the beauty of the region will be compounded by vast fields of flowering mustard plants and thus increase tourist footfall.
Encouraging the farmers to convey their shortages to him, he added that nano urea and granular urea had been used in the mustard fields and it will be discerned from this year's harvest, which one is more suitable to the soil and costs less but yields more harvest.
Meanwhile, N Gojendro stated that the seeds distributed today had been imported from Rajasthan with great effort due to ongoing conflict in the State.
In addition, he highlighted that the seeds had been chemically treated and advised the gathering against consuming them and to use them only for cultivation purposes.
Lastly, he urged them to find out which one between nano urea and granular urea is more suitable to the land and produces a better yield.
Mustard seeds, peas and masoor dal etc were also distributed to the attending farmers today.
