Jiribam, June 14 2024:
Jiri Development Organisation (JDO) president E Deewan has categorically stated that what the people of Jiribam want is not necessarily the visit of Chief Minister N Biren Singh but for the authorities in the district to enforce law and order in the district.
There is no confirmation on when the Chief Minister will visit Jiribam after his advanced security was ambushed at K Sinam Village on June 10 .
Addressing a press briefing jointly organised by JDO and United Jiri Youth League (UJYL) here today, E Deewan continued that the communal tension in Jiribam flared up after one Meetei civilian was killed on June 6 .
Many houses have been torched by armed miscreants while thousands of people have either fled to Assam or are taking shelter in relief camps since then (June 6), he added.
Appealing to the Government to let the displaced people resettle at their villages even if reconstruction of houses is needed for some families, the JDO president added that police stations in Barak circle especially Chotobekra police station, Jirimukh police station and Makha Basti police station need to be upgraded to deal with the emerging threats.
There are several security concerns in Barak circle and for this many memoranda have been submitted to the Government in the past, he said while reiterating the demand to upgrade the above-mentioned police stations.
Deewan also expressed desire for the Government to deploy adequate State security forces in the district.
Further stating that Jiribam Hospital exists only in name and no doctors want to be posted in the district, he appealed to the civil society organisations in Imphal to pressure the Government and the authority concerned to address the shortcomings in the interest of the people of Jiribam.
On several organisations reaching out to displaced folks in Jiribam, Deewan expressed desire for these organisations to consult with the CSOs in Jiribam first and to be extra careful while giving public statements.
Spreading wrong or inaccurate information may aggravate the situation in already tense Jiribam, he cautioned.
UJYL president Ph Gyanendra Meetei and JDO general secretary H Priyananda also attended the press briefing.
