A memorial site in remembrance of three Communist party activists who lost their lives during the 1951 movement has been inaugurated at a Tinsid hill range, Imphal East district today with assistant secretary of CPI Manipur L Sotinkumar and noted writer Dr Hijam Harnet as the chief guest and president respectively.
The Park is said to have been constructed by Irabot Charitable Trust, Manipur.
Recounting the event, a Trust release said on March 31, 1951 three Communist activists namely Khundrakpam Birchandra, Konthoujam Achou and Sorokhaibam Kondum ambushed an Assam Rifles convoy escorting a doctor to AR posts located at Angom Leikai and Tumukhong.
Decision to launch action against the security force was adopted during series of Communist party meetings as a consequence of the AR personnel intensifying raids to subdue the movement.
With only one arm, the Communist trio with the intention of snatching weapons from the AR to intensify the Communist movement, opened fire killing one on the spot with the other hit and rolling down the hill slope.
Thinking both were killed the three comrades advanced only to find the second AR personnel very much alive, the Trust release recounted while adding that the injured AR jawan retaliated killing Birchandra and Kondum on the spot while Achou passed away at a hospital.
In memory of the valiant acts of the three the memorial site inaugurated today was established, the release added.
