Imphal, January 22 2015:
Joint Students' Co-ordination Committee (JSCC), a conglomerate of various students' bodies today locked the doors of four mission schools protesting the schools' authority's move to conduct written test for selection of students seeking admission to Class I .
St Joseph's School, Catholic School, Little Flower School and Nirmalabas School were among the schools whose doors were locked today by the students from 1 pm.
Addressing a press meet later in the day at the office of Kangleipak Students' Association located at Kwakeithel, convener of JSCC, Th Premananda said that the student body requested the Director of Catholic Education Society, Manipur not to conduct written test for selection of students seeking admission.
The student body, on Jan 20, pleaded for selection of students seeking admission to Class I in the schools through lottery system.
However, the schools authority defied the request and decided to conduct admission test by displaying advertisement through local dailies, he said.
He said the doors of the schools were locked to protest the authority's decision to conduct admission test for selection of students.
According to the JSCC, written examination for admissions to Class I would not only give space for corruption and would also widen the gap between the rich and the poor.
Poor parents could not simply afford to send their children for coaching classes just for a seat in these schools.
Further more, written examination for admission to Class I is not reasonable, added Premananda.
The admissions should be done through lottery system and no other means should be employed.
Written exams would not be transparent as there are chances of manipulating the answers in favour of some persons, Premananda added.
He further urged the guardians not to apply for admission to these schools and to rather join the move to conduct the selection process through lottery system.
JSCC further said that they would launch other forms of agitation if the lottery system is not applied for admission to Class I in the mission schools.
