CMOs discuss steps against rabies

Imphal, January 22 2015:
With an aim to formulate concrete measures for future and introduce an action plan to check rabies menace, a meeting of Chief Medical Officers of different districts was held at the conference hall of MACS, Lamphelpat with Directorate of State Health Services and NHM Manipur Director Dr Okram Ibomcha in the chair today.
The meeting reviewed the number of dog bite cases coming from different parts of the State, said an official source.
The Director directed the district officials to report unnatural deaths on time to take up immediate steps to check outbreak of any disease.
Dr Ibomcha also asked the officials to conduct awareness campaigns on rabies outbreak before the onset of next winter season, the source added.
The Director also told the officials that rabies cases must be detected in co-ordination with experts and officials from Veterinary Department in future.
He said that Directorate of Health Services could take up timely steps to check further spread of rabies virus acting on media reports.
Saying that public have cooperated with the Directorate by turning up at different health centres to vaccinate their pet canines, Dr Ibomcha said that public awareness and remedial measures at the individual level are a must to check any outbreak.
Stating that the rate of dog bite cases happening in the State is not alarming and it is still at the average rate, Dr Ibomcha urged the general public not to panic.
Medical Superintendents, District Programme Managers of National Health Mission and other district health officials attended the meeting.
