Imphal, January 22 2015:
Adding another feather to its cap, Shija Hospitals and Resarch Institute has successfully treated a case of symptomless breast cancer.
According to a statement released by the hospital, a 48-year old lady from Uripok, a teacher and a mother of two who presented to Dr.Ajit Lukram, Consultant of Shija Breast and Thyroid Clinics in January, 2015 was found to have suspicious appearance of breast cancer in her left breast on X-ray mammogram.
She was completely unaware of any swelling, pain or any other discomfort in the breast when she walked in to the breast clinic for a routine check.
Known as "impalpable lesions" (swellings which cannot be felt) in medical terminology, these cancers of the breast are detected on screening, currently being done on a regular basis at Shija Breast and Thyroid Clinics, which was conceptualized in 2013 by Dr.Ajit Lukram, trained in United Kingdom.
The lady underwent biopsy of the abnormality through marking and exploration.
The report turned out to be invasive ductal cancer of left breast in early stage.
She underwent curative surgical treatment subsequently at Shija Hospitals.
This is one of the first cases in the region where impalpable (symptomless) cancer is diagnosed and treated and it highlights the importance of screening for breast cancer which is routinely done in UK, USA and other western countries.
