Imphal, September 23 2022:
The United Committee Manipur (UCM) has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister N Biren to develop Mount Manipur (former Mount Harriet) of Andaman and Nicobar Islands in a holistic manner.
Speaking to media persons at their Lamphelpat office this evening, UCM president Joychandra Konthoujam said that a team of UCM called on Chief Minister N Biren today and submitted a memorandum on proper development of Mount Manipur.
He informed that copies of the same memorandum have been dispatched to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the MP elected from Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
During their meeting, the UCM team urged the Chief Minister to instal a life sized statue of Maharaj Kullachandra at Mount Manipur which is the highest mountain range of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Joychandra told media persons.
King Kullachandra was among the 23 people who were exiled to Andaman and imprisoned in a cellular Jail known as Kalapani following the defeat of Manipur in the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891 .
The UCM team also appealed to the Chief Minister to construct a common memorial tower at Mount Manipur in honour of all the 23 people exiled there.
Construction of a rest house or guest house at Mount Manipur and renaming of Manipur Parvat National Park as Mount Manipur National Park was some other demands put forward by the UCM team, Joychandra said.
Publication and distribution of leaflets, post cards and documents on the lives of the 23 martyrs to tourists was another suggestion made by the UCM team to the Chief Minister.
The Chief Minister reportedly listened to the UCM team attentively and assured that maximum efforts would be invested to translate all their suggestions/demands into action.
Joychandra said that five members of UCM and three journalists visited Mount Manipur from July 6 to 10 this year.
There, the visiting team paid tributes to the heroes and martyrs of the Anglo-Manipur War.
However, the visiting team could not see any meaningful development work even though it was said that Mount Harriet had been renamed as Mount Manipur, Joychandra remarked.
The UCM put forward its suggestions and demands to the Central Government and the State Government with an intention to make the renaming of Mount Harriet as Mount Manipur more meaningful and preserve those important historical chapters for eternity, he added.
