79th Manipur Independence Day celebrated across State

In remembrance of the day the British left Manipur on Aug 14, 1947, the 79th Manipur Independence Day was observed widely across the State today.
In thoubal, the day was marked with the hoisting of the Manipuri flag imprinted with Ibudhou Pakhangba and various commemorative rituals.
The SCEASDO, HLCSU in collaboration with Heirok Apunba Meira Paibi organised the event at the SCEASDO office in Heirok.
Speaking on the occasion, Heirok Apunba Meira Paibi, convenor Khundongbam Gunamani Leima recalled that on August 14, 1947, King Maharaj Budhanchandra hoisted the Ibudhou Pakhangba flag, declaring Manipur's Independence.
She emphasised the importance of remembering this day so future generations understand the joy of freedom.
She further stated that even though Manipur merged in the Union of India, Manipur gained its Independence a day before India.

The event also honoured three Meira Paibi members of Heirok Apunba Meira Paibi for their continued vigil and sacrifice in safeguarding the community since the beginning of the ethnic conflict on May 3, 2023 .
They were presented with traditional shawls.
Observance of the 79th Manipur Independence Day also took place in Wangjing, Lamding, Nongpok Sekmai, Kakmayai, Athokpam, Waithou, Pechi, Salungpham, Thoubal Kshetri Leikai, Heirok, etc, organised by the Meira Paibis and local clubs of the area.
In Bishnupur, the 79th Manipur Independence Day was marked with the hoisting of the Ibudhou Pakhangba flag at Kumbi Keithel.
The event was jointly organised by the Kumbi Bazar Development Committee, Machasinggi Apunba Mama Lup (MAML) Bishnupur, Khuga Athletics and Library Association (KALIB), Kumbi and Kumbi Ideal Youth Development Organisation (KIYDO), Kumbi.
Social Activist Jaya Khangembam led the programme, which saw participation from members of KBDC, KALIB, KIYDO, and students of Kumbi Ideal English School.
The gathering celebrated the occasion by raising the flag depicting Ibudhou Pakhangba.
Later, as part of the event, 13 journalists were honoured for their dedicated role in delivering news and information to the public since the onset of violence in the State on May 3, 2023.They were presented shirts written 'Press' by Social Activist Jaya Khangembam, and conferred them the title "Athouba", in recognition of their service and dedication.
