Importance of enhancing soil health highlighted

World Soil Day 2022 was observed widely across the State today on the theme "Soil: Where Food Begins".
All India Coordinated Research Project on Micro and Secondary Nutrients and Pollutant Elements in Soils and Plants (AICRP-MSPE), Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal Centre organized World Soil Day, 2022 today at CAU Central Farm, Imphal.
The programme was attended by the Dean, College of Agriculture, CAU, Imphal; professors; scientists and staff and also farmers from Imphal East and Imphal West districts.
The Principal Investigator (PI) of the project and also Dean, COA, CAU, Professor Indira Sarangthem delivered the keynote address on "World Soil Day" and spoke on importance and management of soil health emphasizing soil micronutrients.
CAU Agronomy Head Professor L Nabachandra, Department of Horticulture Professor U Chaoba and Extension Education Head Professor Angad Prasad attended the observance as presidium members.
Many students of the university also participated in the programme and spoke on different topics related to the theme.
As a part of the awareness programme for soil health management, vermicompost was also distributed to the fanners.
ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Imphal West in collaboration with AICRP on Soil Test Crop Response, ICAR-IISS, Bhopal organised World Soil Day today.
L Bobby Devi, Upa Adhyaksha, Imphal West-1; Niangkhanvung Guite, General Manager, NABARD RO, Manipur and Dr I Meghachandra Singh, Joint Director, ICAR Manipur Centre, Lamphelpat graced the programme as the presidium members.
Addressing the gathering, L Bobby Devi stated that every farmer should have the habit of testing their soils so that soil could be managed properly and improved as we cannot live without it.
She further expressed that plastic has become a major problem in soil because of its indiscriminate use coupled with improper disposal systems.
Bobby also called upon all farmers to refrain from using chemical fertilizers like urea and appealed to them to promote integrated farming systems.
Speaking at the occasion, the dignitaries highlighted the importance of the World Soil Day and significance of soil for food production.
They also appealed to all farmers to adopt soil friendly farming methods so as to preserve the fertility of the soil.
During the programme, Soil health cards were distributed to 24 farmers of Manipur.
Later a farmers-scientists interaction programme was also held.
The College of Food Technology, Central Agricultural University, Lamphelpat too organized the World Soil Day in the conference hall of the college.
Dean of the College, Professor Dr Ng Iboyaima Singh addressed the occasion which was attended by faculties, officers, non-teaching staff and students of the college.
