Imphal, February 07 2024:
A heavy gunfight broke out in the periphery areas of Itham Moirangpurel in Imphal East today as Kuki militants attacked the Meetei village once again.
The exchange of firing ensued after Kuki militants fired upon Itham Moirangpurel from the nearby hill range in the early morning using bomb launchers and other sophisticated weapons.
There, however, is no report of any injury.
Notably, Itham Moirangpurel is situated close to Tumolok where a group of sand miners were attacked by heavily armed Kukis yesterday.
Reportedly, six trucks which were stranded at Tumulok since yesterday following the attack by Kuki militants have been recovered by Imphal East commandos today in the morning.
According to sources, Kuki militants first bombarded Itham Moirangpurel Meitei from Itham Moirangpurel Mamang hill range at around 3.30 am and it was followed by indiscriminate firings.
There was an exchange of fire between the Kuki militants and security forces after the latter retaliated.
The cross firing lasted for about 30 minutes.
After a brief lull, Kuki militants launched another offensive using bombs and sophisticated weapons at around 6 am from the hill range and it triggered the second round of firefight between the two sides.
It is said that the second round of gunfight was shorter and lasted only some minutes.
Security personnel carried out a massive search operation in some suspicious areas after the attack but no one was arrested.
Sources said that the situation at Itham Moirangpurel is still tense and as such security measures have been tightened.
