Teachers protest

Imphal, August 04 2017: Teachers of DM College of Teachers' Education today attempted to picket the office of the Directorate of University and Higher Education located at Nityaipat Chuthek .

The teachers today stormed the office with placards 'Convert DM College of Teachers' Education into a university.' The teachers then went inside the office and asked the officials to go outside.

After the evacuation of the officials, the teachers tried to put a lock on the door of the office which they could not as personnel of the Imphal West Police arrived on the scene .

A minor tussle followed after which both the parties resorted to a dialogue.

The police then told the teachers to meet the Director and put their demands to him which the teachers refused to do .

A teacher of the DM College of Teacher Education told media persons that DM College of Science, DM College of Arts and DM College of Commerce are included in Dhanamanjuri University as per the Dhanamanjuri University Bill 2017 passed by the State Legislative Assembly yesterday .

The Govt must explain the exclusion of DMCTE in the University.

If the Govt is going to poll three of the DM Colleges into a university leaving out one, then the Govt might as well take away the name 'DM College' and there will be no demand for conversion into university, he said .

The Education Minister made the decision to exclude DMCTE without any forethought and it is not acceptable.

If there is a rule that there can be no BEd courses in a university, then the BEd courses in the Manipur University must also be cancelled, he said .

The DM College of Teacher Education has been producing good students for a number of years.

This attitude of undermining its teachers is condemnable.

The Govt must convert the DM College of Teacher Education to a University as soon as possible.

Until the demand is met, the teachers will carry on with the protests in an intense manner.
